Joplin city council to consider a new Whataburger and redesign of golf driving range

After taking last week off, the Joplin city council will reconvene tonight. On the agenda, the committee will consider whether to approve new fast food and entertainment venues. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The city council will first hear about plans to construct a Whataburger location near the intersection of Rangeline Road and E. 20th street in the open lot next to Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The council will consider whether it is appropriate for the new Whataburger to be partially constructed in a flood plain. Another point of discussion will be how developers will handle northbound traffic on Rangeline.

The left-hand turn lane at Rangeline and 20th doesn’t allow for U-turns. Developers have indicated they are working with MODOT and the Army Corp of Engineers to work out remedies. The council will also consider whether to rezone the Rangeline Golf Center at 2001 N. Range Line Rd so that a Top Golf concept can be constructed.

Developers say they would keep the existing nine-hole golf course, putt-putt golf, and add a kids’ putt golf course. Both the Whataburger and golf course redesign have already been approved by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

The council meeting gets underway tonight at city hall at 5:45. For 89 9 KRPS, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro
