Joplin Unity mural officially unveiled as jazz great Charles McPherson watches on

On a hot Sunday afternoon, residents, guests, and Joplin (Missouri) native and jazz great Charles McPherson gathered in downtown Joplin to unveil a new mural. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The Joplin Unity mural painted by acclaimed Kansas City, Missouri artist Austin Alexander on the north wall of the optical center, Bruce’s Point of View, at the intersection of 1st and Main street in downtown Joplin.

Proceeds from a concert that Charles McPherson performed this past February in collaboration with Connect2Culture helped deliver the project, which was entirely paid for with private funds.

McPherson was on hand yesterday afternoon to observe the mural’s unveiling, which includes a portrait of him. He also treated the crowd to a brief concert.

The undertaking is the culmination of years of planning and the efforts of McPherson and his family, Connect2Culture, the Joplin Arts District, the Langston Hughes Cultural Society, The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center of Joplin, Post Art Library, Pro Musica, Spiva Center for the Arts, and Visit Joplin. For 89 9 KRPS, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro
