Car prices are up and so are the number of scams targeting car buyers

According to vehicle valuation and automotive research company Kelly Blue Book, the cost of a new car is just over $47,000 this year, an increase of 13 percent over 2021.

While electric vehicle prices have risen 15% on a year-over-year basis, hybrids are priced 18% higher. This has led many consumers to turn to sites like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist to stretch their dollars further when purchasing a vehicle.

Don O’Brien of the Better Business Bureau of southwest Missouri has this advice. “You can protect yourself if you actually go look at the vehicle. I can’t believe Fred, the number of people that contact us at BBB and say well, I just sent them the money, and they said they would transport the car to us. And then not only do they lose money for the vehicle itself, but they also pay a transfer company that’s not real.”

Don recommends contacting the seller by phone, not just through email or text. And not to give in to threats or intimidation from the seller.
