Tonight at the Joplin city council meeting, public hearings will continue on a possible new Dollar General location. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
The proposal for an 8th Dollar General in Joplin would be constructed at the 500 block of E. Zora St. and N. St. Louis Ave. Most Dollar General locations are constructed in commercial areas where they are already existing businesses.
The proposed site of the new store would be in a residential area just north of the Frisco Greenway trail, where there are no existing buildings. Public comment at a recent Planning and Zoning meeting yielded pushback against the new retail space.
Residents highlighted that new apartments might be a more acceptable development. Also, that drivers regularly speed on St. Louis and Zora, and the new Dollar General location would only worsen the problem.
Joplin’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved the plan by a 6 to 1 vote. The formal position of the Joplin city council meeting gets underway tonight at 6.
