Police in Webb City, located just north of Joplin, Missouri, are continuing their investigation into the possible suicide by a relocated teenager from Afghanistan. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
Police say the investigation is ongoing into the death of 14-year-old Rezwan Kohistani. A student found him on May 5 near the baseball fields at Webb City High School, where he was a student.
Kohistani’s family had arrived in the US last year in the aftermath of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. On Friday, the Missouri and National chapters of the Council on American and Islamic Affairs said they were “saddened and distributed” Kohistani’s death and are calling for a “thorough, complete and comprehensive” investigation.
The Webb City police department, in a statement Saturday, says that it has seen reports on social media that Kohistani was bullied at school, which may have played a role in his death, but in their initial investigation, they have been unable to substantiate those allegations.
The department says they are waiting for the toxicology report before issuing their final report. The Jasper County coroner has ruled the teen’s death a suicide.
