If recycling were easier to access in Webb City, would more residents use it?

Over the past three meetings, Webb City Ward 3 Councilmember Jonathon Schull has brought up recycling during the open discussion period of city council meetings.

Mayor Lynn Ragsdale, who was re-elected to a four-year term as Mayor earlier this month, said Monday night that city officials got only six responses last year when the city sent out $4,500 worth of mailers trying to assess whether residents were interested in curbside or a more robust recycling center in the city.

Ragsdale contends that recycling gets mixed with other trash and thrown into the same landfill. He said that he would happily bring a full-blown recycling center to Webb City if he received a notarized letter from the head of a trash company that they separate recycling and regular garbage.

Currently, Webb City offers cardboard recycling only near city hall. Residents also take their recycling to neighboring Carthage and Joplin.

In 2018 a curbside recycling program was tried and later abandoned in WC.
