Joplin Police on Tuesday held the first of two funerals the department will hold this week. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
Representatives from law enforcement agencies from across the US converged on Joplin Tuesday to attend the memorial service for Joplin police corporal Ben Cooper. Cooper and Joplin police officer Jake Reed were killed last Tuesday during a shoot-out. A third officer, Rick Hirshey, was also shot but survived and sustained severe injury.
Yesterday, Joplin Police Chief Rowland Sloan remembered Corporal Cooper, “Coop, was a rock-solid police officer for our department. He was viewed as an Old Hand, a Cop’s Cop, a War Horse. Just being some of the terms that I’ve heard used this last week. Roxy called him rockstar and superman. Which I’m sure Coop brushed off with his typical comments. But he loved you, and he loved his girls.”
A public viewing for Officer Reed will be held Thursday from 1 until 4 pm at Missouri Southern’s Legget and Platt Center. Reed’s funeral is scheduled for Friday at the same location.
