Today is the filing deadline for Joplin residents who want to run for the city council. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

While many residents voice opinions about what the city council should do, only a handful of residents put their money and time where their mouth is and run. If a Joplin resident was interested in running for city council this would be a good election to do it in. Five of the nine council seats are up for grabs, including three general council seats, and the seats in Zone One and Four.
If you’re running for one of three general council seats, you must collect at least 150 signatures. And if you’re running in either Zone One or Four, half of those 150 signatures have to be residents of those respective zones. Gathering enough verifiable signatures is one of a handful of requirements to run for City Council. Visit Joplinmo.org and click on Government, and scroll down to City Council for more information. If elected you’ll earn $5 for each city council meeting you attend. Election day is Tuesday, April 5. For 89 9 KRPS, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro
