Since it was first discovered last month in South Africa the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has been detected in 34 US states. With the exception of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and the area of Southwest Missouri, according to Jessica Liberty Freeman Health System’s Infection Prevention and Control Manager who spoke Wednesday at a media briefing, “Well, what we do know right now which is great news is that the Omicron variant is not here. We have a lot of requests from the state that are asking for specimens to determine if there is the presence of that variant and there is not. What we’re seeing predominantly is the Delta variant.”
Kansas reported its first case of Omicron on Friday. According to the latest data from the CDC, over 96% of current cases of the coronavirus are the Delta strain. While Omicron accounts for fewer than 3% of new cases.
