Tonight, Webb City high school football will try to earn their 16th state title in Columbia, taking on Holt in the class 5 championship. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The Cardinals had a rough start to their season when they lost to rival Joplin at home, 41 to 40. Overall, Webb City football went 10 and 3 on the season, winning their last six games, including a 35 to 21 victory over Jackson last week in the semi-finals. During that six-game winning streak, they have outscored their opposites, 251 to 110. Last week in defeating Jackson the Cardinals snapped the Indians 26 game winning streak.
If Webb City is to claim another football title they will have to get through a 13-0 Holt team that defeated Osage Beach last week 35 to 21. During his 25 year tenure leading the Cardinals head coach John Roderique has won 12 state titles, ten of those teams were undefeated. Earlier this year Roderique was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Tonight, the title game between Webb City and Holt will be played at Mizzou’s Faurot Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. For 89 9 KRPS, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro
