The 4th of July is just 11 days away and the city of Joplin and Missouri Southern State University are teaming up for a modified celebration due to the pandemic. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The rules governing the fireworks show at Missouri Southern in Joplin will essentially be the same as they were in 2020. Unlike years past, where spectators watched the fireworks in and around the football stadium at Missouri Southern, visitors will be allowed to park their cars on campus starting at 8:30 pm.
Joplin Public Information Officer Lynn Onstot speaking at the city council meeting Monday night. “The city of Joplin and Missouri Southern have modified this years independence day celebration to a fireworks only show. Fireworks will be set off on the eastern side of Missouri Southern campus on Sunday at 9:45 pm. Sunday July 4th. Area residents are welcomed to watch the display from the designated Missouri Southern parking lots.” The show will last approximately 20 minutes and will be set to music, which visitors can tune into 88.7 FM KXMS to hear.
