Fall is still over 100 days away, but the planning for fall festivals is well underway. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
That time of year when the leaves begin to change colors, there’s a briskness to the air and there numerous festivals throughout the area. Including in Neosho (Missouri) where during last year’s Fall Festival the city approved booth space for the far-right, neo-fascist group, The Proud Boys.
At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, members debated the topic of whether political groups like Black Lives Matter and the Proud Boys should be allowed at this year’s festival. Here’s part of an exchange City Council Member Angela Thomas had with Neosho Mayor William Doubek. “There was a lot of feedback from citizens. And I know there were a lot of people who said they just won’t come to the festival because of that. Doubek, “At the same time, I can only speak for the group that’s here. And the vast majority of the Proud Boys here are veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. They are also members of our VFW and our American Legion.” The city council ultimately voted 5 to 2 in favor of allowing direct retail vendors, in addition to any other group or organization that wants to be a part of the event on Saturday, October 2.
