Later this month, the city of Joplin will remember the 10th anniversary of the devastating EF-5 tornado that caused nearly 3-billion dollars in damages. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The day to remember those who were lost will start with the 10th running of the Joplin Memorial run. The half marathon and 10k start at 6:30 am, while the 5k starts at 6:45.
Following past years, there will be a gathering at Cunningham Park, near the time of 5:41 pm. Lynn Onstott, Joplin Public Information Officer, speaking at Monday’s City Council Meeting. “The observance ceremony will mark the moment from 2011 to honor and remember the loved ones who died with a read of the 161 names. Former Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has been asked to speak regarding the recovery with Joplin Mayor Ryan Stanley serving as the MC of the program.” Joplin is holding a community event in Cunningham Park at 3 pm Saturday, May 22, prior to the observance ceremony and speeches.
