The number of coronavirus cases inside the city limits of Joplin continues to be high. As of Thursday, the city’s health department reported 293 active cases. Just 5 cases short of the high of 298 since the pandemic began that the city reported last week. On Thursday, the city reported 34 new active cases, which is, on average, how many new cases the health department is seeing daily. Meanwhile, Jasper county, the county where Joplin is located, remains in the top 10 for positivity rate in the entire state of Missouri. The Missouri Department of Health reported Jasper county had a 22 percent positivity rate, tying it with 2 other counties in Missouri for the 3rd highest rate in the state. Newton county leads Missouri with a 25 percent positivity rate. Also, on Thursday, the Joplin health department reported 1 additional death related to COVID-19, bringing the total to now 37.
